Baby Carrier: Tamarin

Baby Carrier: Golden Tamarin (Leontopithecus rosalia)

For the first few weeks, the baby is carried on the mother’s stomach.

Tamarins live in tight-knit, complex social groups. After three weeks or so, the father and other members of the group take turns carrying and providing solid food for infants. They bring the baby to the mother for milk.

Baby tamarins become more and more independent – around week 5, the mother and others in the group begin to reject the baby’s attempts to ride on their backs – although the father tends to be more permissive, and will carry his babies until they are weaned at about 12 weeks old.
