Baby Carrier: Trumpeter Swan (Cygnus buccinator)

Like many other species of swan, Trumpeter Swan mothers occasionally carry their babies (called cygnets) on their back during the first few weeks of life.

This keeps them safe from predators and helps orient them to swan life.

When they get scared, the babies clamber aboard and hide beneath their mom ’s wings.
