Baby Carrier: Giant Anteater (Myrmecophaga tridactyla)

Baby Carrier - Anteater

Mother giant anteaters give birth standing up, to a fully furred baby.

The baby immediately climbs onto her back, aligning the pattern of its fur to hers, so they blend together (usually - although not in this pic!). This hides them from the hungry eyes of predators.

Baby Giant Anteaters are carried for 6 to 9 months – by that point the mother anteater is usually carrying a baby that's almost half her size!
