Baby Carrier: American Alligator (Alligator mississippiensis)

When baby alligators hatch from their eggs (which are buried in a nest), their mother digs them out and carries them to the water.

They not only ride on her back and head, but when danger looms they will hide inside the safety of her toothy mouth!

Baby alligators will usually stay with their mother for about one year.
